A Dancer's Journey Through Comparison

As a member of Gen Z, Ayana Active Marketing Intern Lea Codispot grew up alongside the explosion of social media. Every one of her peers was on Snapchat and Instagram before middle school, cyberbullying was rampant across the country, and selfies were taken on every corner. While many people flag social media as the root of comparison culture, the real battleground of comparison for Lea was in the dance studio.

From the tender age of three, Lea's life revolved around dance. The studio and its focus on ballet technique became both her sanctuary and crucible. Ballet, with its stringent stereotypes of the "perfect ballerina," set a high bar for comparison. Standing in front of a mirror clad in skin-tight attire, every movement invited comparison and scrutiny.

In this environment, comparison became inevitable. The subtle nuances of technique, the height of jumps, and the number of turns performed all became subject for self-evaluation and comparison. Competitions further intensified this pressure, as dancers were judged on their image and ability while competing for the highest medal.

Lea reflects, "Comparison pushed me to be better, yet it stifled my expression. How could I truly express myself when my every move was measured against others'?"

College marked a turning point. Surrounded by dancers from diverse backgrounds and training, Lea realized the richness of individuality. Instead of viewing others as rivals, she saw them as sources of inspiration and learning.

"In an art form like dance, diversity is key. It's what makes each performance unique and captivating," Lea explains. "I learned to embrace my differences and leverage comparison for self-improvement, not self-doubt."

Through her journey, Lea discovered the true power of comparison: not as a force of judgment, but as a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. Today, she dances with newfound freedom and joy, celebrating the beauty of individuality in every graceful movement.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
