The Art of Crafting a Vision Board
Vision boards, rooted in ancient practices dating back to Egyptian times, stand as timeless reminders to nurture a healthy mindset and sustain motivation in daily life. These visual manifestations of aspirations serve as powerful tools for goal prioritization and intentionality, guiding individuals towards their dreams.
Ayana Active had the opportunity to host our first ever vision board workshop with students at Bucknell University, invited by the Griot Institute for the Study of Black Lives & Cultures. Here, we led students in the creation of vision boards using the following tips and tricks.
To begin the creation of a vision board, one must first contemplate their life considering five key areas: career, relationships, health, hobbies, and personal goals. Close your eyes, envision your wishes, and translate them into tangible goals. Then, armed with clarity, gather materials for your vision board.
Your vision board can come to fruition digitally or physically. While digital platforms like Canva offer convenience, many find tactile creation more resonant. Gather an array of supplies from magazines and newspapers to personal photographs and fabric swatches, allowing creativity to flourish.
Selecting images is a deliberate process, aligning each visual representation with your aspirations. Whether it’s a green landscape evoking a desire to spend time in nature or a medal to remind you of a goal to run a 5k, each photo should inspire your individual journey. At Bucknell we offered pieces of nylon fabric. Nylon is known to be the most resilient fabric - no matter how much it is stretched or pulled it always bounces back. Students used this on their boards as a symbol of resilience in their lives.

As you arrange your materials, prioritize visual clarity and coherence. Avoid overcrowding your board, allowing space for reflection and refinement. Remember, your vision board is a dynamic tool - it doesn't mandate immediate completion of all goals but serves as a beacon of inspiration and direction.
Ultimately, the efficacy of a vision board lies in its visibility. Place it where you'll encounter it daily - a bedroom wall, an office desk, or even as your phone lock screen. By keeping your dreams front and center, you not only stay on track but also cultivate a mindset of clarity and purpose.
