Our First Trade Show - Here’s What Happened

Attending the White Milano Trade Show in Milan was a huge milestone for Ayana Active. It was a show dedicated entirely to trade (no fashion runways or extravagant displays) just a focused opportunity to present our brand to retail buyers and potential industry partners.

Traveling from Pennsylvania to Milan with my assistant, we got the chance to see firsthand how a brand like ours fits within the global retail space. It was a unique opportunity to showcase Ayana Active as a sustainable sportswear brand for modest fashion consumers, and it truly highlighted how important presentation is when meeting with potential buyers. We weren’t just selling a product, we were giving them a vision of how we see Ayana Active placed in the retail landscape.

What I learned:

  1. Presentation Matters: It’s not just about having a beautiful product. It’s about presenting it in a way that speaks to buyers, showing them the future of where your brand fits into their stores.

  2. Know Your Numbers: Be prepared to speak about your business, your numbers, and what makes your brand different. Being able to talk about our sales potential, growth plans, and market insights was crucial.

  3. Communicate Your Brand Message: When you speak clearly about your mission, your target market, and what sets you apart, the right people will connect with you. You don't have to convince everyone. Just speak to those who resonate with your message.

  4. Making Promising Connections: We had some great exchanges with retail buyers, and it was thrilling to see that interest in our brand. This was a fantastic way to build relationships that can turn into meaningful partnerships.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was that when you communicate your message with clarity and confidence, you don’t have to chase everyone. The right people will find you. Being intentional in how we set up our booth, how we spoke about our mission, and how we aligned with the needs of buyers made all the difference. It was also a strong reminder that every detail from layout and visuals to pricing sheets contributes to a buyer’s impression of your brand.

Tips for First-Time Trade Show Attendees:

  1. Do Your Research: Know the show’s audience, the type of buyers attending, and your ideal retail partners. Tailor your pitch accordingly.

  2. Prepare Your Presentation: How you present your brand is as important as the product itself. Think about how you’ll showcase your product in a way that tells your story.

  3. Know Your Numbers: Be ready to talk about pricing, margins, production timelines, and any other data that could be relevant to potential buyers.

  4. Practice Your Pitch: You won’t have a long time with each buyer, so your pitch needs to be clear and concise. Practice until it feels natural.

  5. Network: Don’t just stay in your booth. Talk to as many people as possible, even those who might not seem like potential buyers. You never know who might connect you to the right person.

  6. Be Ready to Follow Up: After the show, make sure to follow up with everyone you spoke with. Relationships take time to nurture.

This experience taught me that growth doesn’t happen overnight, but every step, every connection, and every conversation count. Trade shows like White Milano are not just about selling; they’re about showing up, standing firm in your brand vision, and building the future you believe in.
